ZINC COLLAR ANODE

The zinc collar anode, clamped around the propeller shaft with its own screws: it protects the section of shaft exposed to seawater from galvanic corrosion, without having to remove the propeller-shaft coupling.
Sacrificial anodes wear away in place of the metal parts they protect from galvanic corrosion: they must be checked and replaced once wear exceeds 60%, since beyond that point they no longer provide effective protection. Zinc or aluminium is used in seawater (aluminium, for equal protection, weighs a third less, has a higher electronegative potential and is less polluting, making it especially suited to aluminium hulls); magnesium is preferred for freshwater-only use.
